Bars

Walsall Bars are a mixed offering – the usual chains mixed with some good independent bars. Most of the bars are closely packed around the town centre (check out the map for more info). Some of the best bars to put on your list to visit are as follows………..

Bar NV

Bar NV is Walsall’s answer to a trendy champagne bar in the likes of London or New York. However, Walsall is neither of those places and never will be! Despite that, Bar NV is actually a decent attempt at a trendy bar that is classier than it’s neighbours. With an extensive champagne and wine menu (thankfully at Walsall prices rather than London) and a fully stocked ‘normal’ bar serving the usual array of bottles, draft beers and cocktails, you’re unlikely to run out of choice – the occasional special offers are also one to keep an eye on! The surroundings are certainly preferable to the typically bland chain pub alternatives, so you might be surprised to remember you’re still in Walsall! Food is served during the day as well, but don’t expect haute cuisine – typical pub fare would summarise the offerings nicely, but there is nothing wrong with that….!

Bar NV is at 49 Bradford Street, Walsall, WS1 3QD. Map and directions available here.

R1 Bar

Certainly one of the more stylish bars in Walsall, with a laid back feel and modern, sleek decor. It is fairly small, so it is either a bit cramped or gives a good atmosphere depending on your take on such things! It is open fairly late with a mix of music from the DJ. A bit different from the usual chain pubs around the area (although it does have sister bar in Aldridge – does that make it a chain?!?) – it is worth a visit for that reas0n alone as far as I am concerned!

R1 bar is at 27 Bridge Street, Walsall, WS1 1DP. Contact number is 01922 629 9898. Map and directions available here.

Revolution

It may be another chain bar, but this Vodka bar does have a bit of a classier feel than some of its neighbours. However, that does mean its prices are adjusted accordingly, but to be fair its still hardly astronomical! There is a full cocktain bar and of course, being a Revolution, there is the usual wide array of flavoured liqueurs on offer. It’s open ’til late most nights and has a dresscode that isn’t too strict. The music is a bit of everything but expect house, R&B, Garage at the weekends with anything else the rest of the time. During the day, it serves generic bar food, but they do carry on serving late into the night so you can get something to sober you up a bit if you have one too many samples of the flavoured vodkas….

Revolution is on Bridge Steet, Walsall, WS1 1JQ. Contact number is 01922 627640. Map and directions available here.

St Matthew’s Hall (Lloyds No.1 Bar)

Recently converted by Wetherspoons and trading under the Lloyds No1 Bar brand, you pretty much know what to expect – cheap drinks, reasonably sleek and modern décor (they have done a pretty good job with this one), mixed crowd from young to old and loud music at night from oldies to the present day. Always a good atmosphere, no doubt fuelled by the lashings of cheap wine on offer (way under £10 per bottle…) and extensive bottle selection. During the day there is a decent selection of pub grub at rock bottom prices. There is also an outdoor area out back, and amenities like wi-fi if you feel the need to browse and party at the same time!

St Matthew’s Hall is on Lichfield St, Walsall, WS1 1SX. Contact number is 01922 700820. Map and directions available here.

Pitch Sports Bar

If you love watching all the biggest and best sports while you have a few drinks, this place is perfect. If you’re looking for a civilised and classy night out, you might want to look elsewhere…! The drinks are properly cheap, the TV’s are huge and the tunes from the DJ at the weekend are loud and thumping into the early hours. It’s also bigger than it looks at first glance from the street, and the decor is a bit fresher than in some other sports bars that spring to mind. Open during the day as well, it does offer some fairly cheap but generic pub food. So all in all, your typical sports bar, don’t go expecting champagne bar sophistication and you shouldn’t be disappointed!

Pitch is at 47-55 Bridge Street, Walsall, WS1 1JQ. Contact number is 01922 650124. Map and directions available here.

Wharf  Bar

A bar nestled by the river and art gallery might suggest it will be a bit snobby and faux trendy, but it is actually a pretty chilled place to have a drink. It is open during the day and serves food but it’s nothing special, its a venue more suited to an evening’s activities! There are cheap drinks offers some nights, and also the occasional bit of live music to keep things varied – check with them for the latest listings!

Wharf Bar is at 10 Wolverhampton Street, Walsall, WS2 8LR. Contact number is 01922 613100. Maps and directions available here.

Yates

A Yates’s bar is a Yates’s bar, we’ve all been to one and they’re are all much the same – but at least you know what you’re getting. During the day there is an extensive food menu, even open in time for a slap up breakfast if you’re feeling tender from the night before. Don’t expect to be blown away by the food, which is hardly gourmet quality, but what do you expect for the price?!? Drinks are nothing out of the ordinary, but its Yates so it’s damn cheap, more so on Thursdays with ‘Quids In’ available last time I checked which offers drinks for £1 – that is bound to end badly…! There are always offers to be had though, so as you would expect it gets pretty rowdy. As long as you don’t mind sharing your drinking space with the odd stag or hen party dancing to the banging tunes at the weekend you should have a decent time.

Yates is at 23-29 Leicester Street, Walsall, WS1 1PT. Contact Number is 01922 637691. Map and directions available here.

Varsity

Another staple of the city centre chain pub revolution, Varsity has everything you need from your central bar. By day, it’s a comfy bar to get some pub food or coffee with wi-fi available as well. By night it turns into a busy late bar with a dance floor and DJs playing a bit of everything. Always a good atmosphere, and a bit more restrained than some of the other bars in the vicinity. Drink selection is nothing special, and if you have a Vcard it should keep things fairly cheap.

Varsity is at the corner of Darwall St/Leicester St, Walsall, WS1 1DA. Contact number is 01922 633769. Map and directions available here.
